Why UCI?
Our faculty is internationally recognized for innovative research on traffic modeling and simulation, transportation information and control systems, road pricing and consumer behavior, transportation/land use interactions, activity-based travel analysis, and modeling of vehicle choice and use. An evolving theme is advanced logistical support for freight systems.
Our students can choose from four graduate degree programs: M.S./Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, M.U.R.P./Ph.D. in Urban & Regional Planning, Ph.D. in Economics, and Ph.D. in Transportation Science. These programs are highly integrated, providing students with exposure to a wide range of intellectual and analytical skills.
Our students can choose from nearly 50 graduate transportation courses. Students are strongly encouraged to take courses outside of their primary discipline to broaden their academic and research interests. Many of these courses meet the requirements of all four degree programs.
Our students receive focused and intensive faculty mentoring as they prepare for their thesis/dissertation work and subsequent professional careers. During the past 15 years, we have placed 26 Ph.D. graduates in academic positions. Many more have gone on to successful careers in industry and public service.
Our students have access to quiet, well-equipped offices and state-of-the-art computing facilities and laboratories. UCI is home to a growing array of research centers that provide financial support and/or opportunities for advanced data collection and analysis.
Our educational environment is intimate and interactive. The formal curriculum is supplemented by small seminars on current research topics and bi-weekly luncheon discussions involving faculty and students from a wide range of disciplines.
Our research environment is highly collegial. Students play a key role in the design and implementation of multidisciplinary projects and are encouraged to present the results of their own research at professional conferences and in scholarly publications.
Our record of financial support for graduate students has been strong and sustained. In the last 15 years, transportation programs and extramural research grants have provided more than $1 million in graduate fellowships and funding for over 500 graduate student research positions.
Our campus, established in 1965, is one of the fastest-growing in the University of California system. Located in Southern California's coastal region, UCI is blessed with an unusually temperate climate.
We invite you to explore the opportunities for graduate study in transportation at UCI!
